AfriBeads are fashioned by hand from magazine pages. No two beads are the same.
The beads are individually made from triangles of paper, which are rolled, glued, and varnished with an environmentally friendly sealant. The finished beads are then arranged between tiny glass beads and created into unique, gorgeous, and recycled jewellery. The necklaces are finished with non-allergenic parrot clasps. The beads are water resistant and durable in normal wear. Please keep away from children as the beads are small, and must not be sucked by young children.
The bowls are made using a traditional coiled weaving technique with millet stalks and raphia leaf wrapped around banana stem or papyrus leaf. The dyes are made from native plants. The patterns on the bowls each represent an element of traditional African culture and are traditionally given as gifts on special occasions. We recommend lining them with a serviette or cloth if used for fruit or bread, and they can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
The market bags are hand-woven using a reed-like grass. They may come decorated with traditional patterns, often in earthy tones. If out of shape, run water over them and gently mould them back into shape, then sun dry. The bags are durable and perfect for shopping, the beach, storage or for a decorative element in the corner of the lounge room.
To create this African traditional fabric, a section of bark is harvested from a native fig tree and pounded flat. The bark cloth is then printed, stitched and created into bags and cushions. To clean them, wipe it with a damp cloth, and if necessary, cool iron.
The 100% cotton Kitenge fabric used for the clothing is sourced from the city markets in Kampala. Each item is individually made on an old fashioned treadle sewing machine by the Ugandan artisans. They use vibrant colours and patterns, inspired by the beauty and traditions of Africa. Wash in cool water with like colours. Use a warm iron to press. Don’t tumble dry.
The cushion covers, aprons, and table cloths use the same vibrant Kitenge fabric as the fashion. They add a touch of Africa to your home. The fabric animals are a decorative feature and must not be used as a toy by children. The fabric is 100% cotton and is machine washable. We recommend washing with like colours in cold water for the first wash.
