Achievements

    • 2009 – AfriBeads was established in Australia and placed its first order of paper bead jewellery with the group in Uganda, then called the Kind Mother’s Project.
    • 2010 – 20 children started school as a result of the women having more money from selling their craft in Australia. Equipment was purchased including a computer and jewellery-making tools to assist the project. AfriBeads started importing baskets in addition to the jewellery.
    • 2011 – Craft classes started for the children on the weekends run by a local young man, the son of one of the artisans. Further equipment was purchased including a guillotine to cut the paper for the beads.
    • 2012 – AfriBeads purchased sewing machines and the women began sewing and dress making.
    • 2013 – The AfriBeads’ Women’s Association (then called the Kind Mother’s Project) started renting a shop with a meeting room for the women to gather and do their work.
    • 2015 – A group of 8 Australians visited Uganda organised by the coordinator of AfriBeads to work alongside the women and help them develop new skills.
    • 2016 – One of the Ugandan sewers started attending sewing school, paid for by AfriBeads, and a new collection of children’s clothes was launched.
    • 2017 – New product lines were created including cushion covers and table cloths. A group of volunteers from Australia taught the artisans how to make scented candles and soap to sell in the local market in Uganda.
    • 2018 –  The artisans in the AfriBeads Association requested help in finding a shop that was better located where they could sell their products to locals and tourists. A group of Australian volunteers helped the artisans in Uganda secure a new shop in Makindye with AfriBeads assisting with the rent. A generous donation from Rotary Canada Bay paid for shop fittings. Two of the Australians experienced in retail, assisted in merchandising the shop and training the women in retail procedures.
    • 2019 – A new fashion range was developed including a long skirt and dress with the assistance of volunteers from Australia. Another volunteer taught the group to make wax wraps for food storage, using local Ugandan wax and the colorful African fabrics.
