Afribeads bowls and platters are all made with 100% natural material that is sourced locally by the Afribeads makers in Uganda.
Weaving the African Basket
The makers use local raffia palm leaf can be left to show it’s natural colour, or dyed to the required colour. The maker then wraps the raffia around long strips of banana leaf stems. The banana leaf stems are firm and give structure to the basket.
Traditional Craft
Basket weaving is carried out from the woman’s home in between her other domestic duties. This is a traditional craft in Uganda, with the knowledge on how to weave has passed down from generation to generation and amongst the local community.
The women are skilled weavers able to produce detailed patterns with different colours and designs.
