What is Fair Trade?

One of the Afribeads Artisans at work basket weaving | AFRICAN BASKETS AUSTRALIA WHOLSALE | AFRIBEADS

Fair Trade is a global movement that aims to alleviate poverty through trade.

The Fair Trade movement is a social enterprise movement that was founded over sixty years ago. The Fair Trade model is to work with disadvantaged producers, often in developing countries, to empower them through providing fairly paid employment and access to market. So rather than a charity based model where handouts are given to those in need, those who are in need or disadvantaged are provided with fairly paid ongoing employment, ensuring a sustainable income and a structure that enables community support and community building.

What is the philosophy behind Fair Trade?

The Fair Trade movement is based on the 10 World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) Principles of Fair Trade. These 10 Principles provide a framework for fair trade businesses, that enables them to build a business that supports the goal of alleviating poverty through trade.

The Fair Trade movement works across a range of industries. Many people are familiar with Fairtrade tea, Fairtrade coffee and Fairtrade chocolate. The broader Fair Trade movement encompasses much more than these commodity items, including supporting traditional artisans to continue their crafts.

What are the WFTO 10 Principles of Fair Trade?

The WFTO 10 Principles of Fair Trade are:

  • Fair Trade Principle 1: Opportunities for Disadvantaged Producers
  • Fair Trade Principle 2: Transparency & Accountability
  • Fair Trade Principle 3: Fair Trade Practices
  • Fair Trade Principle 4: Fair Payment
  • Fair Trade Principle 5: No Child Labour. No Forced Labour.
  • Fair Trade Principle 6: No Discrimination. Gender Equality. Freedom of Association.
  • Fair Trade Principle 7: Good Working Conditions
  • Fair Trade Principle 8: Capacity Building
  • Fair Trade Principle 9: : Promote Fair Trade
  • Fair Trade Principle 10: Respect for the Environment

How the Paper Beads are Made

The AfriBeads paper bead jewellery is all handmade in Uganda, Africa. Every item of jewellery has each bead made by hand, by the Afribeads Artisans.

Each Paper Bead is Hand Rolled

Each bead is hand rolled with paper. The paper is sourced from local paper warehouses, which upcycle old paper posters, marketing material and magazines. The women go to the warehouse and select the paper to make the beads.

The paper is cut into long, thin triangular shaped strips. Each bead is then hand rolled to the desired size and shape. The AfriBeads women have perfected rolling the beads to specific sizes and shapes for the different jewellery designs.

Painting and Lacquering of the Paper Beads

Once the beads are rolled, they are stringed and dipped in paint, if a specific colour is needed. Some designs let the colour of the paper show through, in which case they are not painted.

The beads are then dipped in lacquer to seal them and provide the finish.

Stringing the Paper Beads

The jewellery is then made by stringing the paper beads together. Small craft beads are used in between the paper beads for different designs and effects.

Sustainability of Paper Beads

Using upcycled paper to create the paper bead jewellery is a fantastic use of an existing sustainable resource. In addition to reducing waste by using paper that would otherwise be have to go through the process of recycling or end up in landfill, it reduces the consumption of energy required for the production of new beads from non-sustainable resources.

Weaving the African Basket

The makers use local raffia palm leaf can be left to show it’s natural colour, or dyed to the required colour. The maker then wraps the raffia around long strips of banana leaf stems. The banana leaf stems are firm and give structure to the basket.

Traditional Craft

Basket weaving is carried out from the woman’s home in between her other domestic duties.  This is a traditional craft in Uganda, with the knowledge on how to weave has passed down from generation to generation and amongst the local community.

The women are skilled weavers able to produce detailed patterns with different colours and designs.
